Sheremetyevo International Airport has become Russia’s first airport to meet the “China Friendly” requirements, developed by the Travel Association “World without Borders”. The program aims to ensure high service standards and a comfortable stay for PRC passengers in the Russian Federation.
Sheremetyevo International Airport is Russia’s main air gate and the most convenient transit hub between Europe and Asia. Aeroflot, Air China, China Eastern, China Southern, Hainan and Sichuan Airlines have flights to China destinations from Sheremetyevo. A total of 3,027 flights arrived from China in 2016, with 1 million 551 thousand passengers (+13% versus 2015). Regular flights are available on 10 routes — to Peking, Shanghai, Huangzhu, Chengdu, Wuhan, Xi’an, Ürümqi, Tian Shan, Sanya and Langzhong, and further expansion of the route network is in plan.
Sheremetyevo International Airport is major hub connecting China to Europe. Over 590,000 passengers flew via Sheremetyevo in 2016 from different points in China to different points in Europe. Travel from Peking and Shanghai to St. Petersburg, Barcelona and Milan via Sheremetyevo deem to be most popular.
Due to the expanded entry tourism from China, Sheremetyevo has recently created comfortable conditions for the Chinese passengers’ stay: loudspeaker announcements, navigation in the airport premises, official website and a guidebook about Moscow, are all available in Chinese, duty free shops and restaurants accept UnionPay cards. Imperial Duty Free stores offer special promotions and discounts Special for UnionPay cardholders
“Since China is a strategic partner and a leader in entry tourism into Russia, China Friendly is a key segment in the comprehensive loyalty program ‘Russian Hospitality,’ which is being implemented on the initiative of Rosturizm and foresees the creation of favorable conditions for foreign tourists staying in our country by observing specific requirements for accommodations, dining and providing information. We value that Chinese travelers choose the Russian Federation and are working actively to create a comfortable tourist environment for them. We are glad that our country’s leading international airport, which by tradition focuses heavily on passenger service quality, has added the China Friendly Program. We are confident that Sheremetyevo’s high service standards, adapted to the needs of Chinese tourists, will promote more tourism from the PRC,” commented Oleg Safonov, Head of the Federal Tourism Agency.
In turn, the airport’s participation in the China Friendly Program will permit it to improve more effectively the quality of services for Chinese tourists. Airport employees will be trained in the subtleties of working with Chinese visitors, their traditions and national characteristics of the PRC citizens.
“China is currently one of the most rapidly growing destinations. Sheremetyevo serves as a major air bridge between Europe and Asia due to its geographical position. We are striving to ensure high service quality for our passengers on the route between China and European countries. We are thus constantly developing our infrastructure and introducing new services in Chinese. This is definitely a new direction in the airport’s improvement. I am confident that Sheremetyevo’s development as a comfortable transport hub will increase entry tourism from China, and on the whole, develop partnerships between Russia and the PRC,” commented Andrei Nikulin, First Deputy General Director for Production of MASH JSC.
The 2017 plans for Sheremetyevo include launching a mobile app in Chinese, hiring Chinese-speaking staff, opening a restaurant specializing in Asian and Chinese dishes, and more. “The companies that become program participants undergo special training and receive special consulting with specialists from World without Borders. A high-quality reception means that tourists from the PRC come back to Russia and recommend certain establishments to their friends and relatives. It is very important that Sheremetyevo International Airport joins our program, because it is without exaggeration the country’s main air hub. We are trying to help our airport colleagues to make the Chinese tourists feel as comfortable as possible from the very first minute of arriving on Russian soil,” emphasized Anna Sibirkina, Director of the China Friendly Program.
Sheremetyevo International Airport is also an active participant in projects to promote Russia on domestic and foreign tourist markets. Sheremetyevo and the National Marketing Center Visit Russia signed a strategic partnership agreement in 2016, whereby the airport becomes one of the reference points for the Visit Russia project.
The China Friendly Program has been under development in Russia since 2014. It was officially registered in 2015 in Rosstandart as a Voluntary Certification System of Services of the China Friendly Program. It specifies development of a definite set of requisite criteria and requirements for companies working with Chinese tourists (hotels, restaurants, airports, shopping centers, museums, etc.). The criteria include materials and guidance in Chinese, free Wi-Fi, possible payment by China UnionPay cards, and arrival/departure board in Chinese (for airports).
Sheremetyevo International Airport is Russia’s largest airport in volumes of passenger and cargo handling, runway operations and area of the terminal complex. Sheremetyevo routes cover over 200 destinations.
Sheremetyevo International Airport was Europe’s best airport for service quality in 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016 in the ACI (Airports Council International) ASQ (Airport Service Quality) rating.
Based on 2016 results, with 83,5% overall ontime operations Sheremetyevo International Airport became the most punctual European airport in category largest airports (over 20 mln departure scheduled seats per year) .
